Fred Sloan

Mr. Charles Fred Sloan, 89, of Louisville, departed from Winston Medical Center and headed to his "Happy Hunting Grounds" on January 2, 2017. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at Porter Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Rev. Mike Childs will officiate. After growing up on a small farm during The Great Depression, Mr. Sloan served in Germany during World War II as a Tank Destroyer Squad Leader and also in the Korean War with the 7th Infantry Division. He served the citizens of Winston County as Sheriff and Tax Collector from 1968 to 1971. He was then employed by Gov. Bill Waller as Special Investigator and Assistant State Motor Vehicle Comptroller and also as Special Investigator for the State Alcoholic Beverage Control. He retired from the military in 1987 at age 60 with 40 total years in the U.S. Army, Mississippi National Guard and Army Reserve with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4. Fred's big heart was filled with kindness and generosity. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" was his motto and that was the way he lived his very full life. If wealth was measured by friends, Fred was one of the wealthiest people in the world. Dancing Rabbit Hunting Club in Noxubee County was his pride and joy. He was the founder and club president for 50 years. Mr. Sloan was preceded in death by his parents, Hob Sloan and Ada Sullivan Giffin; by sisters, Nannie McQuirter and Ada Lee Chambee; his brothers, Howard Sloan and Jimmy Sloan; and his grandson, Steve Sloan. He is survived by his wife, Dwight Luke Sloan; sons, Kacey Sloan and Barry Sloan of Louisville; sister, Maude Brown of Greenville, Alabama; grandchildren, Mellissa (Gene) Luke, Jason Paul Sloan, Mathew Sloan, Clint (Shelby) Sloan and Mallory (Steven) Eaves, adopted grandson, Ryan Egger and great grandsons, Seth Griffin and Zach Sloan. Pallbearers will be Clint Sloan, Jason, Sloan, Ryan Egger, Glen Luke, Larry Luke, and Matthew Sloan. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Dancing Rabbit Hunting Club.
