Morris Hurt

Morris J. Hurt, age 77, of Elm City, NC, passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at Duke University Medical Center. He was born on July 22, 1938 in Louisville, MS; to the late Hampton and Mae Hurt. Morris attended school in Chicago, Ill., and Louisville, MS. He took Management Courses at Mississippi State University and the University of Alabama. Morris was Manager of Construction for Mitchell Engineering Company from 1956 to 1980; which merged with Ceco Steel. In the early 80’s, Hurt along with E.G. Smithson formed their own General Contracting Company, Smithson, Inc. In 1984, the two started Basepoint Co. In 1987, Hurt and Robert Coggins started DanCo Builders, Inc. In 2002, Hurt Enterprises was formed. These companies are unlimited licensed General Contractors. Morris was a member of Englewood United Methodist Church, Rocky Mount Moose Lodge for 47 years, Corinthian Lodge #230 A.F. & A.M., Enfield Valley A&A Scottish Rite, New Bern Valley A&A Scottish Rite, Sudan Shriners A.A.O.N.M.S. of New Bern, NC. for 39 years, and a member of the American Coon Hunters Association. In his spare time, he was an avid golfer and coon hunter. He was known worldwide by his treeing Walker “Hurts” Balling Banjo. Morris is preceded in death by his son, Bernard Jeffrey Hurt; brothers, Howard, Elon, John Earl and Zeno Hurt; sister, Elton Glassco and his father-in-law, Bernard Whitehead. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving family, and wife, June Hurt of 57 years; son, Marcus “Mark” and his wife Deannie Hurt of Youngsville, NC; daughter, Margaret H. Pearse and her late husband, Timothy Pearse of Elm City, NC; grandsons, Michael Hurt and his wife Kindell Hurt, Mason Hurt and his wife Krystal Hurt, all of Youngsville, NC; grand-daughters, Charlotte Hurt of Franklin, NC; Meagan Pearse and Crysta Pearse of Rocky Mount, NC; Alys Pearse of Raleigh, NC; great-grandsons, Myles Hurt, Malcolm Hurt and Manning Hurt; brother, Lamar Hurt of Louisville, MS; sisters, Etta Mae Hurt of Mobile, AL. and Joy Peters of Dalphina, AL; mother-in-law, Donie Whitehead of Louisville, MS; brother-in-law, Harold Holton and sister-in-law, Janice Holton of Houston, TX; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at Porter Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until service time. Interment will be in Ellison Ridge Cemetery.
